Medical Electives in Peru

This programme allows you to work and learn at any of the hospitals asociated to Mundo Verde Spanish School and visit one of the most beautiful old cities in the world and the richest jungle at the same time. By taking our medical electives, 30% of your money will be used to support our conservation project in the Peruvian rain forest.

Cusco
Our electives take place at 3500 m in Cusco, the oldest city in South America, former capital of the Inca Empire, you will be able to see the magnificent historic legacy left by the Inca through archeological sites as well as the Colonial architecture in the city, and will experience the local life style and of course will immerse into the fantastic night life.

The other destination is located at 185 m in Puerto Maldonado, the world’s biodiversity capital, a quieter city, surrounded by the Amazon rain forest where you will experience the diversity of the Amazonian wild life and will work in a friendly and nice atmosphere, always assisted by our doctors.

Orientation:
You will spend your first week taking intensive Spanish lessons and adjusting to the altitude at the same time, our lessons have been tailored for each level of Spanish, emphasizing the medical terminology and topics related to it. Our lessons have been designed for the weeks you will spend in our country either working at the hospital or travelling . You are welcome to take extra Spanish lessons if you wish. Lessons will be given 3 hours a day during the first and second week.

Our representatives will also show you some aspects of the Peruvian society so you will learn how to deal with daily situations, you will be given a local guide book especially made for our visitors which contains basic information regarding local sites and places to eat and drink.

You will begin working at the hospital starting your second week, one member of Mundo Verde will take you to the hospital and will wait there with you until you have met your doctor, we will be following your electives by visiting you 2 times per week at the hospital to make sure that everything is going as expected.
We can advise about vaccination and visa before you come to Peru.

Hospitals:
Elective attachments are with hospitals and small clinics in Cusco and Puerto Maldonado (the rain forest) which vary from private modern hospitals to basic government hospitals. Many students will stay first in Cusco and after that they will progress to Puerto Maldonado so they will experience both the Andean and the Amazonian way of working and living.

Accommodation:
We have a large 5 bedroom house in Cusco, you will share your bedroom with another student, 3 bathrooms and a patio near the centre of the city and close to the hospitals, and in Puerto Maldonado in the rain forest, we have clean and safe accommodation in a very nice residential hostel which is located nearby the hospital, at the very centre of the town. Our staff will always be available to ensure that you have a good elective in case of any emergency.

Our programme includes breakfast from Monday to Friday, internet is available in the student’s house so is a telephone and Cable TV so you will practice Spanish and improve the knowledge you have on it by watching films or TV shows with subtitles, DVD player will have the same purpose, there is one lady who does the cleaning twice a week and is also in charge of bringing the food supplies for breakfast

There will be a welcome dinner and other group events as well as meetings with local medical students.

Inka Trail: (First Trip)
One of the best trails in the world, you will have the chance to walk the same path the Incas did more than 5 centuries ago, and you will enjoy of the magnificent architecture of Machu Picchu.

You must know that the Inca Trail is visited by thousands of tourists so booking it with at least 4 months in advance will give you the chance to walk this way, there are alternative routes though to visit Machu Picchu, so if there is no room available to do the Inca Trail then we will take you on a different trek to see Machu Picchu.

Condor watching: (Second trip)
An exciting way to watch the king of the Andean skies in its domains, this trip takes place in the Apurimac Canyon, near Cusco, this trip lasts 2 days and you will see a typical Andean landscape, besides you will stay in very nice lodge in the middle of the mountains, the exciting thins comes when condors fly above this lodge.

Puno/Lake Titicaca (Second trip)
This trip is leads you to Puno and the magnificent lake Titicaca, you will spend 3 days and 2 nights learning about the indigenous people living in ancient floating islands and you will share their houses and traditions.

The Southern Valley Trip (Third trip)
This 1 day trip will take you to a picturesque area nearby Cusco to see small traditional villages, such as Tip{on, where you can see the archeological site and at the same time you will see the famous cuy (Guiney pig) in the way the locals cook it and eat it!!! Within this excursion, you will see one of the most traditional chapels in South America, and you will also try a type of bread at Oropesa, in the same way that it was made 3 centuries ago!!

White River Rafting (Fourth trip)
This trip needs 1 day and depending on the time of the year, you can experience rapids grade 4, although the common level is grade 3.
